Riding through the jungle on horseback is an exciting way to discover the ancient Mayan city of Xunantunich.
Overview
Xunantunich is an ancient Maya archaeological site that is located near the Belize-Guatemala border, a mere 20-minute drive from San Ignacio Town. The true adventure begins at a river crossing in San Jose Succotz village, where an old (yet safe and reliable) hand-cranked ferry carries you across the Mopan River. From here, we ascend for 1 mile, whether hiking, on horseback, or in the comfort of one of our vehicles, it will be a treat. After arriving at the parking lot, our highly trained guide begins a 3-4 hour tour of this extraordinary site.
Xunantuich is rich in history and remains one of the most popular Maya Sites in Belize. The crown jewel of Xunantunich is “El Castillo,” a towering 130-foot step pyramid that stands as one of the tallest structures in Belize (Caracol Maya Site remains the tallest manmade structure in the country). Climbing to the top of El Castillo rewards visitors with breathtaking panoramic views of the lush surrounding jungle, the serene Mopan River, and even the distant mountains of Guatemala. The intricate carvings on El Castillo provide a glimpse into the artistic and architectural prowess of the ancient Maya civilization.
During its peak in the Classic Maya period, between the 7th and 9th centuries AD, Xunantunich served as a significant ceremonial and political center. The site comprises various plazas, temples, and palaces, each with its own unique history and significance. Exploring these ancient structures offers a fascinating insight into the daily lives, religious practices, and governance of the Maya people.
The name Xunantunich means “Stone Woman” in the Mayan language, derived from local folklore. According to legend, a ghostly figure of a woman, dressed in white, has been seen ascending the stone steps of El Castillo and disappearing into the stone walls. This enigmatic tale adds a layer of mystique to the already captivating history of the site.
